Murder

Murder is a dark comedy about power and deception told entirely through a single button and impeccable timing. You begin as an assassin trailing a king down a narrow corridor, holding down the spacebar to charge your knife before releasing it at precisely the right moment. If the king glimpses you mid-strike, guards drag you to the dungeon and the game restarts. Get your timing right, though, and you ascend the throne—but now would-be assassins hunt you instead. That same spacebar now lets you glance backward, catching attackers in the act or forcing them to stall their approach.

The genius of Murder lies in this role reversal. What you learn as the hunted becomes the blueprint for survival when you become the hunter. Every failed assassination teaches you how assassins actually behave, making you a sharper king. Every successful king reign teaches your next assassin what to avoid. The game cycles between attacker and defender, with no complex menus or lengthy tutorials—just you, one button, and the weight of a crown that everyone wants stolen.

Beneath the slapstick premise hides a sharp observation about power itself. Who can be trusted when everyone wants your position? The assassin doubts the king's attention span; the king doubts whether that movement in the shadows was real. Both roles live on edge, forever watching and second-guessing. Murder wraps this paranoia in a simple mechanic, proving that the best games tell their story through how they play rather than how they explain themselves.

How to play Murder

As the assassin: Follow the king down the hallway. Press and hold the spacebar to raise your knife. The longer you charge, the faster your attack, but holding too long risks exposure. Release the spacebar to strike. If the king turns and catches you mid-stab, it is over. Wait for him to face forward again and try once more, or accept the dungeon and begin fresh.

As the king: Walk forward naturally. Press the spacebar to glance backward over your shoulder. If you catch an assassin mid-attack, they flee and the round ends—you survive to reign another day. But glancing backward takes time, and during that glance, you cannot see what is ahead. Plan your looks carefully.

Controls

Desktop: Spacebar to charge and release your stab attack (as assassin), or to turn your head and look behind (as king). That is the entire control set—Murder plays with constraint rather than complexity.

Tips

As an assassin, watch how long the king typically waits before turning. Some kings move steadily forward; others hesitate at intervals. As the king, vary when you look back; patterns make you predictable. The game rewards observation over reflexes and patience over panic.

Who created Murder?

Murder was developed by Studio Seufz—the artistic and technical collaboration of Anselm Pyta (art, animation, music) and Benedikt Hummel (programming)—in 2014. Originally created as a commemoration of their earlier project EXOTWORKING, Murder went viral across the web and has been played over 100 million times.

Can I play Murder on mobile and desktop?

Murder runs in your browser on desktop computers. The spacebar-only control scheme does not translate cleanly to mobile touch, so the game works best on a keyboard. If mobile support is available in your embedded version, results may vary depending on how controls are adapted for your device.
